How To Choose A Provider

    Only you can decide which offer is best for you.  You may just want the lowest price, or you may want to consider the contract terms, whether there is a promotional offer  cancellation or other recurring fees or the source of energy used to generate the electricity.

  • How to make an informed decision

    The Texas Public Utility Commission recommends that consumers ask the following questions before choosing a Retail Electricity Provider. To make it easier for you to choose the right plan, CurrentChoice® helps you get the answers to each of these questions:

    • Is the Retail Electricity Supplier licensed by the Texas Public Utility Commission (PUC)?

    • What will I pay per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity based on 1,000 kWh usage?

    • Does this rate include everything – the electricity cost, the transmission and distribution charges, fuel charges, if any, as well as a monthly customer charge or other recurring fees?

    • Is a deposit required?  How much is it?

    • What if I miss a payment?

    • What are my payment options?

    • Is this offer a fixed rate offer or a variable rate offer?  If it is a variable rate offer, how can it change and how do I find out when the rate will change?

    • Is there a contract period and if so, how long is it for?

    • Is there a penalty if I break the contract?

    • What happens when my contract expires?

    Once you have selected a provider, read the Electricity Facts Label to make sure you are getting the terms and conditions you want.  Then read "Your Rights as a Consumer" before you buy anything so you understand your rights.  Finally, read the provider's contract so you know what you are agreeing to before you sign up. You will find a link to all 3 of these documents on the same page where you select the provider. You can save these documents to your computer to read later or print them out.

  • What is the difference between a fixed rate and variable rate?

    CurrentChoice® customers always find the right plan with our personalized comparison tool when you enter your monthly usage. In a fixed rate contract, the price of the electricity remains the same for the duration of the contract. No matter what happens in the energy market, you will pay the same amount per unit (kWh) of electricity.

    In a variable rate contract, the price you pay per kWh can fluctuate each month depending on what happens in the competitive electricity market. Some months, variable rate customers may pay less per kWh. Other months, if the price of electricity on the open market is higher, variable rate customers would pay more.

  • What happens after I switch providers?
    • After you sign up with a new provider you have 3 business days to change your mind.
    • If you do not change your mind, your new service will begin in about a week.
    • Your new provider can tell you exactly when the change will become effective.
    • No one will need to come to your home, there will be no interruption in your service, the change will be seamless.
  • After I sign up, how long will it take to switch?

    With CurrentChoice® it can take up to a week to switch but often it is just a few days. Your new provider can tell you the exact date. Many providers also allow you to self-select an alternative start date or a particular move-in date when you sign up.

  • What is budget billing and how does it work?

    CurrentChoice® allows customers to compare Retail Electricity Providers to find the best offer for their needs. Budget billing, also called level or average billing, allows customers to pay a fixed monthly amount for their electricity based on their actual electricity usage for the past 12 months. To make budgeting easier, ask about budget programs or average and level payment plans that offer bills that are about the same amount each month.  All customers who are not currently delinquent with their electric bills are eligible for these programs.

  • What is “Green" or "Renewable Energy”?

    With CurrentChoice® you can make a decision on a green energy plan that fits your family needs.  In Texas, renewable or green energy sources can include natural gas.  For a renewable plan without natural gas look for electricity that is generated from a 100% renewable source like wind, geothermal, biofuels, hydroelectric, and solar power.

  • What information does CurrentChoice® collect and how is it used?

    CurrentChoice® may collect basic information, such as your name, address, email address, phone number and social security number.  This information helps to ensure your switch to a new electricity plan goes through without a problem. CurrentChoice® may request information that allows it to access your electricity usage data from your smart meter so CurrentChoice® can provide you with customized savings estimates when you shop and compare plans, and provide monthly updates of your electricity usage.  CurrentChoice® takes the security of its customers' information very seriously. All data is transmitted over secure connections and stored according to industry-standard best practices.

  • Will I have to pay a deposit?

    Depending on your utility payment history, a new Retail Electric Provider (REP) may charge an up-front deposit.  In some instances, deposits can be waived or paid in installments.  Not all REPs have the same requirements for taking deposits.  If one REP requires a deposit it does not mean that every REP will ask for one.  Ask each REP for more information.

  • What if I miss a payment?

    Any Retail Electric Provider (REP) can discontinue service for non-payment.  If you have any problems with paying your electric bills on time, and need to work out a payment plan, ask your REP about its budget programs or average and level payment plans.

  • What are bundled and unbundled rates?

    In Texas, Retail Electric Providers can choose between offering customers a bundled rate or a unbundled rate.  Bundled rates include recurring fees that you must pay each month to the Transmission Distribution Utility (TDU) (otherwise known as: Oncor, Centerpoint, AEP, TNMP and Sharryland) to deliver the electricity to your house or apartment regardless of the Retail Electric Provider you choose.

    Comparing bundled and unbundled rates is like comparing apples to bananas. Unbundled rates don't include TDU charges.  An additional complication to comparing rates is that the electric providers now charge a wide range of additional fees, like the low usage fee, that applies each month if you use below a minimum amount of electricity.  These fees can be as high as $19.95 a month.  If you find an unbundled rate you think is a good deal, first add up the TDU fees and any extra fees and then compare.  The good news is on CurrentChoice.com we only show bundled rates and all the fees – so you can see the Total Cost* of electricity before you buy and so you won't be surprised later when you get your bill.

    CurrentChoice® will match the lower advertised price of an identical plan found on another website where the lower price plan is available to the general public.  This matching offer is valid from the time you receive confirmation that your service agreement has been accepted by the electric provider you selected from this site until the end of the 3-day rescission period.

    To claim a Lowest Price Match, a lower priced plan must be identical in all respects to the plan you signed up for on CurrentChoice.com. For example: the contract length, cost per/kWh, monthly charges, all fees, sources and percent of energy mix (e.g. coal, gas, oil and renewables), value of any promotions (e.g. gift cards, rebates, and/or introductory rates), for both plans must be identical.
